Many small business owners are faced with issues from taking payments as there networks are not secure enough to pass PCI compliance. These rules are set in place by the PCI committee which costs the business owners more money if they are not followed. These rules are not governed by any part of the government nor are the fines that are inflicted on the business owners. So, this becomes an issue as the business owners are paying the merchants for payment services and then paying them fines if they cannot pass the tests for the compliance.
There are many things that help to elevate and resolve these issues such as firewalls, port redirections, and third-party vendors for connection purposes. The easiest and most cost effective is a firewall that allows only traffic to secure ports for business functions. But this is not always possible so maybe a blend of technologies is better for the business to still pass.
Businesses should reach out to a QSA company to have them go over deficiencies and they will suggest solutions that can be implemented to bring the business into compliance.
